Top 10 Card Making Basics

People always ask me what are the things they have to have to get started making cards, if there's some kind of kit they can buy. The answer is yes and no. You can spend as much or as little as you want, but there are some basics that are hard to work without.

Here's my list of top ten card making basics. I've kept them fairly general because the specific decisions depend on your budget, the space you have to work in and what kind of crafter you are. I’ve filled in some of my favorites along with their prices and item numbers. You can click on each item to learn more about it and the different options that are available.
  1. A good paper cutter or trimmer (Stampin’ Trimmer, $41.95, 126889)
  2. Paper (Getting Started Card Stock, $8.50, 120954)
  3. Ink (Classic Stampin’ Spots, $26.95, 119979)
  4. Adhesive (SNAIL Adhesive, $9.75, 104332)
  5. Punch (Modern Label, $22.95, 119849)
  6. Stamps (Teeny Tiny Wishes, $45.95, 115370 for wood mount)
  7. Stamp cleaner (Stampin’ Mist, $5.50, 102394)
  8. Ribbon (1/4” Stitched Grosgrain Ribbon, $6.75, variety of colors)
  9. A little bling (Rhinestone Basic Jewels, $6.50, 119246)
  10. Card bases and envelopes (Note Cards & Envelopes, $7.50, 107311)
So for under $200, you could purchase all the supplies to make at least 20 cards (the limiting factor here is the notecards, they come in a pack of 20), but once you take out the reusable supplies like the paper trimmer, stamps and punch, you can easily make a card for $2 or less. Compare that to the $5-15 you'll spend at any retail store!

For example, the supplies to make this card cost me $2.24, after taxes and shipping. Oh and the stamp set? Free during Sale-A-Bration!

Happy Valentine's Day

I'm not usually a big Valentine's Day person, but I had so much cuteness to work with this year, I couldn't resist. I brought some pre cut boxes (that I cut out with the super cute, but retired, matchbox die), paper, embellishments, tools and a stamp and an ink spot with me to work so that I could make my coworkers some treat boxes! Everything I needed fit into a letter sized box that fit in my carry on (though due to scissors and a piercing tool I didn't actually carry it on). I will be leaving some stuff at work so that I can carry on my craft supplies for future projects though...

More Sale-A-Bration cuteness

So I made this super cute card set, using some of my favourite Stampin Up colours (Midnight Muse, Summer Starfruit, Primrose Petals and Raspberry Ripple from the 2012-2014 In Colours collection). The stitched satin ribbon was left over from a promotion last year, and the tiny curly label punch is free during Sale-A-Bration! For every $60 you spend in SU goodies, you get to pick a free product, the punch is just one of the exclusive ones. Some of the stamps are from a set called Pretty Petites in the SAB line as well, and some are from the spring catalogue called Ciao Baby. The DSP is mostly from the spring catalogue as well, a stack called Print Poetry. I did sneak in some More Amour and Patio Party though too, can you spot them?
